I drowsed through the day, an hour or two at a time, waking to wander or drink another cup of tea, water, or orange juice. I'm congested, with a sore throat, nasty cough, and fever, but it's no wonder I'm awake: look at the sugar content of most of what I'm consuming to make my symptoms tolerable!
Cough drops are menthol-medicated sugary sweets, and they help me enormously. I'm alternating them with Ricola non-medicinal drops, again, largely sugar. Orange juice? Sugar. Even my drink of preference to soothe my throat and keep away the cough is really nothing but sweetness, consisting as it does of honey and hot water.
I wonder what a diabetic would do in the same situation? Clearly, there are alternate mild remedies.

Enjoy
I'm drowsy and fighting with a sore throat myself, but only a weensy one.

Grate some ginger and steep in hot water. Strain. To the resulting ginger tea add a squirt of lime juice and a little honey. Drink hot or cold. Simultaneously soothing and refreshing.

Natural cures
Comfrey tea is good to relax you to sleep; as you know, I have been insomniac since the start of the school year, and the comfrey that I bought at the One of a Kind Show works well for me. Comfrey also comes in caplets!
Good luck, dearie. Feel better soon!

Happily, my fever is much further down this morning, although none of my other symptoms have budged. I take what victories I can.

Is there any particular way of recognizing the ginger drink crystals, or will I need to ask?

To find ginger drink crystals go to the aisle that has tea. There is usually something in English on some of the boxes saying ginger drink or something like that. Mostly they come in single serving packets in tea-type boxes but one brand I like, called Gingen comes in a glass jar that looks like the kind Nescafe comes in. It lists the proportion of ginger to sugar on the back and I think you can get spicier or sweeter versions.
You can also get Crysanthemum drink crystals.
