I had thought that waffles were reasonably common in the UK, but their lack of appearance at brunches should have taught me better. As far as I can tell, it is not possible to buy a multi-purpose waffle-making device in this country. Either the small appliance makes waffles and nothing else, or else it only makes other things.

Are George Foreman grills available? Mine has a waffle plate.

Yes, but a waffle plate isn't advertised as one of its features. Unless it's a stealth waffle plate?

Equally, Cuisinart doesn't do multi-function grills with waffle plates in this country. Oooh. If it's the same size, I might be able to order waffle plates on their own to fit them from the US. That would accomplish the goal of minimizing the number of small electrical appliances running around the kitchen while still getting a waffle iron.

I have a George Foreman-type thing (not actually George Foreman brand) which has waffle plates and toasted sandwich plates, so they are available; I think mine was bought at John Lewis.

It's a Phillips 3 in 1 Cucina HD2420.

And it makes yummy waffles. :-)

C. is slaving away over a hot computer, trying to prove that a particular George Foreman model available in the UK, not advertised as coming with waffle plate, does, in fact, do so, based on cross-referencing with the model number and the product description on a US website. Awww.

I thought "waffle" was based on an Anglo-Saxon word? How on earth could there be no waffles in Anglo-Saxonia? I cannot conceive of such a world.

Here, waffles tend to be pre-made, pre-packed, excessively sugary for preservation, and heated up as needed to with, say, ice cream.

My university cafeteria had a dedicated waffle machine with bottomless waffle batter tureen, but the only domestic, multi-purpose waffle production device I have ever owned was a toaster. This, of course, presupposes local availability of frozen waffles and carries a warning that one should NEVER empty a bag of chocolate chips into one's toaster in the quest for chocolate chip waffles.

Unfortunately, the one time I've been there, I made the terrible mistake of ordering a double sweet waffle, thinking it would be reasonably small. It was sickly beyond belief, and the person I was with couldn't finish his. I should try a savoury one some time.

I had thought that pre-pack waffles were hyper-sweet as a preservative method. From your description, it sounds as if places making them fresh STILL hyper-sweeten them, perhaps to match what people are used to in pre-pack.

Kind of off-colour, but our uni caf has a waffle station with a machine that is for some reason, "gummi bear" patterned. The top is always open, and of course, the bear's head is at the bottom of the upper plate. So what one sees unless one looks closely is an elongated shape with slight bumps along the sides, ending with a bulbous (one bulb for each ear) portion at the bottom. I thought it was just me, but I walked several of my female colleagues,some of whom are pretty straight-laced by the damned thing and told them to glance sideways ... there's not a one of us that can walk by the damned thing now without cracking up!

Moral: waffle irons should have only the traditional pattern, thanks!

Forgive my European ignorance but I'm intrigued now. What other things do you expect a waffle machine to be able to make? What does the waffle machine of your dreams look like?

Well the George Forman Grill people talk about is essentially an electric waffle iron (actually I've never really used waffle irons or such general purpose grills so this is based on TV advertising and such), except bigger(?) and without a built in waffle mold. Instead if you want to make waffles you need a removable waffle mold plate to be inserted. Other variations allow you to optimize for the grilling application at hand. Owlfish wants some kind of general purpose heating device like that.

Perhaps the lower prevalence of waffles in the UK is due to some reaction by Euro skeptics fearful of a Belgian waffle conspiracy from Brussels.

Or possibly such generic waffle technology is in contravention of EU waffle regulations?

My dream waffle machine would be a dedicated device; however, I don't want to waste precious kitchen space on it when - at least in the US - I know it's possible to buy multi-function devices that have interchangeable plates and so does heating with a variety of surface - sandwich grill, griddle, waffles etc.

I have only rarely tried waffles in this country and so far have always been disappointed. Two weekends ago I was at a pub serving really good food in Dorset and one of the desserts was pecan waffle with maple syrup and vanilla ice cream, so of course I ordered it. It turned out to be a weird limp pancake with a pattern slightly embossed on it.

The Anvil in Pimperne near Blandford Forum... great otherwise, but the waffles, not so good.

We grew up (Oxford, '60s) with a waffle iron - but then they seemed to vanish from human ken, until a couple of years back m'friend'n'colleague

jemck turned one up somewhere near Oxford. So they are still available, apparently, but you have to be in the basin...
