We visited Tonbridge for the first time last weekend (not counting all the times I've been through recently on the train to-and-from Canterbury). It felt like a healthy, livable, accessibly-sized town, with both a decent array of shopping, and older elements, such as the motte-and-bailey at the city's center.

Lunch with friends - C. of Withersea, [livejournal.com profile] swisstone, [livejournal.com profile] ladymoonray, M. and P. - was the highlight of the day. We also saw about 20 minutes of the town while briefly touring in the dying winter light.

Seeing that picture gave me a surprise. That is where I grew up and my parents still live. I didn't expect to see pictures of it in anyone's livejournal. They do a lot of plays, fetes and other events on the castle lawn (your third picture) when the weather is better. Tonbridge wasn't like that when I lived there, though. It wasn't thriving so much, most of the shops were empty and boarded up at the time.

I didn't know you were from there! I quite liked what little of it I saw.

Who'd've thunk England could get so cold in Winter? It did this year!

What's that mound leading up to the walls in the second photo? It looks a bit man-made.

It's the motte for the keep. It is a little odd having the walls go up it, given what it is.
