Andrew Lloyd Webber is writing a sequel to the Phantom of the Opera. I've never read any of Leroux's novels, but based on the plot, it's hard to see where, story-wise, a sequel would immediately go or what benefit it would have.

In other musicals-of-doom news, I'm going to see the thoroughly gloomy new musical Marguerite in a few weeks. From the title, you would have reason to think it was based on Faust rather than Dumas' La dame aux camélias. This musical is to La Traviata as Rent is to La Bohème, at least in terms of source material.

I was gonna do some research on where Phantom could go.. but then got distracted by the link to Svengali.

You do realise that Wordsworth have a translation of Leroux's Phantom out at £2.99, don't you?

How good is it? The translations I have seen have been a) cut and b) crap.

I wonder if it's still based on that abominable PHANTOM OF MANHATTAN book.

Sequels to musicals are dumb ideas! We Will Rock You is getting one too. That didn't even have enough story for ONE show! Please people, try originality. I think they've just run out of bad 80s movies to put on stage.

I wondering if he's basing on it the "sequel" I read a few years ago where Christine & Co. travel to New York, where our tortured hero just happens to be. Doesn't sound like that from the title, though.
