In December, I mailed my old and new passports to Durham. I received a letter from Croydon saying the government had received them. Today, I received a package from Sheffield with my passports in them: complete with my UK residency visa!
(How long we're actually staying in the UK depends on what jobs we get where; but it's reassuring to know that I can stay with no further paperwork if we end up doing so.)

congrats
Re: congrats
Old visa: Titled "Entry Clearance"
New visa: Titled "Residence Permit"
Old visa: Specified that the visa was for "Settlement to join/accompany partner" and named C. by name
New visa: No limitations listed.
Old visa: Expired when my passport expired.
New visa: Says it's valid indefinitely.
Either way, however, I still had indefinite leave to remain from the point I got the first visa. I only had to get a new visa because my passport was going to expire.
