I've done a fair many things in the past twenty-four hours, most of them having something to do with eating or transportation. I had a fabulous candy-like raspberry soufflé and tried a novel cock's comb. I started to catch up on sleep, and I'm back in London where I had a very pleasant dinner with
cwjat and
mirrorshard. But more than all that, the most notable thing to happen in that time is that I am now, thanks to an exciting graduation present, the very proud owner of the Compact OED, complete with magnifying glass.

I heartily recommend Simon Winchester's book The Meaning of Everything - a fascinating historical account of the origins and compilation of the OED.

Thanks for the recommendation - I'll check that out.

I am very intrigued by the mention of cock's comb. Was this part of the dinner? I never knew you could eat that part, but Google tells me you can. Or does that part of the post belong to another context?

The cock's comb was part of a different dinner the night before, part of a multi-part dish involving John Dory, entirely crisped wafer-like chicken skin, and the cock's comb - poached perhaps? It was a tender slightly wobbly little thing, golden, texture like a cooked mushroom, and taste like the ghost of organ meat intensity. It never occurred to me that that was an edible part of the bird either!

I've seen the idea of putting chicken skin with fish before - I think it was on Ideas in Food.

I'm also jealous of that raspberry soufflé!
