I listened to the morning news on the radio half-awake. It seemed improbably that there would be so many news stories which vaguely piqued my interest - the radio station is very superficial when it comes to news. But there were. And then there were more when I started reading about them...

• The world's first color quarter is launched today in Canada.
  
• The TTC will finally issue week passes - starting in May.
  
• Canada Post's new international security rules mean that international mail addressed to an incomplete name, such as Aunt Mary, will be refused at the border.
  
• In other news, the British Invention Show is now on: go vote for your favorite invention here.

Although the "world's first" claim is wrong, it's still pretty nifty. I hope I get to see one.

Strange that the article should be making this claim, since I've had this icon for a while (the 2001 limited-edition commemorative Canadian quarter).

The article doesn't make the claim if I remember correctly - the radio station this morning did, and it's never a reliable source of good information. The next question of course is whether or not these are the only two coins out there in color.

There are several coloured Canadian quarters that have been issued over the past few years (all in very small quantities as commemorative coins, but that seems to be what this one is, as well). A partial list can be found here.

This article in the Globe and Mail says it's the first coloured *circulation* coin, which makes a lot of sense. All the others were just commemorative issues.
