C. and I are roasting a turkey for the first time tomorrow, in honor of Canadian Thanksgiving. In order to keep tomorrow's cleaning-frenzy under more control, we cooked squash, stuffing, and giblet gravy tonight. I had no idea that real gravy was so easy to produce! We've gone through a great deal of onion, sage, celery, carrot, parsley, and thyme: all the secondary flavors of Thanksgiving.

Somehow, the weekend is already gone - only the holiday is left. Yes, we did quite a bit of grocery shopping, including a last-minute mall-trip to find a turkey rack, but where did the days go? I ate, I cooked, I shopped, I napped, and I had a wonderful night last night at the Canadian Salsa Congress (about which I will write more anon). I made apple sauce soup. And the weekend passed by.

What happens when you overcook apple sauce. The flavor was quite good, but the results were rather liquid. I'm made apple sauce before without incident, and I didn't have the burner turned up too high, but I neglected to take into account a very crucial factor: the oven was on, and the apple sauce was cooking on the burner over the oven vent, which means that it was cooking at the higher temperature of the oven, rather than the lower temperature on which I'd set the burner. Consequently, after the allotted twenty minutes, I had apple soup.

What are Canadians thankful for at Thanksgiving? The ability to play hockey in the street for the next six months?

Hmm... That the weather is still reasonably nice, the kids are all back in school, and there are still several weeks to think up a Halloween costume?

I like your version better.

Happy Thanksgiving! For the first time in 6 years, I'll be celebrating the Amercian turkey fest in the UK instead of going to my parents' house. I plan to repeat my prior British Thanksgiving tradition of having KFC takeout on the Thursday and roasting a nice big turkey on the Friday.

I love being an American in Canada, because I always get at least two Thanksgivings every year I'm here. Thanksgiving is worth having more than once a year. In fact, some years I get three Thanksgivings - mealwise, at least, since in the UK, when we spend Christmas with my boyfriend's parents, it's all the same good food all over again.

KFC takeout on Thursday seems entirely appropriate to me.

At least you still have another six weeks or so to track one down! You could always host it yourself... if you really wanted to.

When I was in York for the year, a Canadian hosted American Thanksgiving for us Americans who were pining away for it. She hadn't done anything for Canadian Thanksgiving, and so was particularly happy to coordinate with our desires for turkey and stuffing. That was the first time I ate parsnips, I think. I was pleasantly surprised.

i wouldn't mind doing so, my kitchen kinda sucks for get togethers but if it wasn't too many people it'd be ok. I've met one candian, but i haven't met any americans! i'm not sure what the best way would be. There is a quiz night tommorow but i don't really know anyone here i could ask. hmmm....*sigh*

Thank you, but I think - I hope - we'll be okay. We're using lots of disposable plates and things to avoid an overkill of dishes, which frees up all the normal dishes to be used for serving. We only have enough plates to do dinner for 6 and have everyone eating off of real plates and bowls and things.
