The most useful thing I learned this week was this: I can wear contacts while going swimming!

The only time I ever tried I thoughtlessly dived with my eyes open, and it floated out of my eye and away. I was very confused!

I was told that diving could be a problem, but just swimming isn't. The liquid environment should make contacts stick more securely to my eyes than ever. I always worried about them floating away too which is why I never tried it. I still haven't tried it, but I will now!

That's so cool. I hate swimming blind.
I'm going to have to try it now.

oh, can you?? Iain wears contacts and has always been afraid to swim with them... can you actually open your eyes in the water then?

The person who told me this today says that being underwater with contacts is no problem at all. All that water should only make the contacts still more securely to eyes. In fact, it can even be hard to get them out for a while until one has dried off a bit.

That said, she did warn against diving, something like might help lose or dislodge them. She said that chlorine wouldn't be any more of a problem for contacts than one's eyes in general.

All this is second hand, but I was talking to a doctor at the time, and she said this with great authority, so hopefully she knew what she was talking about.

*noddle*

Yup, the only couple of problems with wearing contacts while swimming is a sudden rush of water flushing the contacts from your eyes and the possiblitiy of some bacteria finding a nice home on the surface of the contact.

The second tends not to be a problem anyway and is even less of a problem if you look after your contacts correctly. The former is only a problem if you are diving into water, or go diving and need to clear water from your mask, or do a lot of vigorous underwater moves with your eyes open. Again, the few problems I've heard of are few and far between.

Personally, I've got prescription ground masks for diving and prescription goggles for swimming -- the goggles were only 20 quid or so. But then, I don't get on with contacts, so I either wear the goggles or see sod all...

The worst part about being short sighted and going swimming without any form of corrective lens? Going into the wrong changing room by mistake...

I wouldn't have thought that would have been too much of a problem ;) Though of course you can't see which would defeat any benefit I suppose ;)

I have to be honest. I have worn my contacts in the water and had them float out of my eyes while swimming and while diving.

Maybe wearing contacts in the water works if you don't open your eyes;)

Interesting... I already knew that diving was problematic, but I've had two people agree that regular swimming can work fine too.

Have you had multiple problems with this - that is, they've come out in both swimming and diving? (I'm really interested in knowing how feasible this is. I'd love to be able to see while swimming.) If I want to be really cautious, I suppose it's cheap enough to invest in a pair of goggles.
