I went outside into the snow this morning with birdsong in my ears and the smell of chocolate in my nose (we live near a chocolate factory). It took me over an hour of trudging and waiting for streetcars to make it to school. It's just as well I had allowed lots of extra time in my morning, although I had not allocated it to trudging and waiting, but to book-finding. I imagine the tutorial this afternoon will be a smaller than usual one as a consequence of the city's slowness today.

I hear that Toronto and indeed Southern Ontario is getting dumped on today. For no real reason I was looking at the arrivals at Pearson Airport and noticed that the majority of the flights were cancelled. I guess the snow really is quite heavy. It's just raining here with no sign of snow at all. I hope that you survive without getting too damp and cold.

It warmed up and became sunny in the afternoon, quite pleasant out really, especially after all the cold of earlier in the week. Of course, this also meant that in addition to all the snow, there were dirty slush puddles helpfully filling in all the intervenings spaces by afternoon. This also means that tonight should produce some lovely sheets of ice. But it's warmer, which is good.

I live in a town with a chocolate factory and it doesn't always smell that nice. In fact on certain days it is foul and makes you feel ill. It all depends on what they are cooking. Burnt sugar can smell awful and the chocolate itself can be quite disgusting. Don't forget that until they add things like sugar chocolate can be foul. A friend who used to live closer to the factory says that the mint aero days are far better as the mint always smells nice.

ah, but i'm odd enough that i rather like the smell of burned sugar, not to mention unsweetened chocolate. but i suppose smelling it all the time would tend to take the enjoyment out of it.

The chocolate factory near us never seems to have bad-smelling days. Sometimes it'll smell spicy, usually nothing at all, but probably once or twice a week, the smell of chocolate wafts through the air. Oddly enough it never makes me hungry - it just makes me happy to smell it. And since I don't smell it all the time, I don't get tired of it!

Our local choccy factory is Nestle (we also have Terry's but that is the other side of town). It could be that it is a combination of their chocolate and their other food products that smells so awfull, but sometimes it is unbearable. Also it could be that your local factory only deals with a certain part of the process and so doesn't have the bad smells. Did you ever go anywhere near the factory in York when you were here? Otherwise I have nothing to compare the factory with.
