This weekend, C released version 3 of one of the Android apps he's been working on in his spare time. And so I am finally getting around to telling you about it.

Expense Clam is an expense tracking app for Android which has features such as photographing receipts, data export, and automatic currency detection of whatever country you have just traveled to. There are two versions. Expense Clam is free if you are willing to put up with ads after 30 days, and if not, there's the paid version, which costs all of £1.70.

If this might be of use to you - and you have a device running Android* - they are both downloadable from the Android Marketplace.

* Unlike me at this point. Also, yes, the logo could use major improvement, but the rest of it looks pretty good, I think.

Edited to add: If only it were a different kind of shellfish, he could use something like this. But I don't have any Playmobil clams.

That's very cool. Almost cool enough to become an Android use for (says Gillian, dealing with three-currency consequences).

I keep getting an error when I try to buy it. Not sure about the free version yet. I'll try again later--it sounds great.

I hate travel forms.

(It's telling me there was "an error" or that I have no connection, when I plainly do because I am in the app store. I have both bars and wifi...)

Edit: Have managed to download it now. Will be happy to report back next time I travel.

Excellent! I'm glad it works and C would be delighted to hear how it works out for you. He's pining for feedback.

What happened to Expense Clam? It's no longer available on Google Play. I've been using it for years and it's brilliant. Now I run my company I've put it up against other expense apps and it shines through every one. I'd like all my Sales team to use it but we cannot download it any more. Could it make a comeback?

Hi,

I removed ExpenseClam from Google Play store for new purchases. It's still available for those that previously downloaded it, but I've decided to start working on the next generation of it, which (if I can complete the job) will be released as a new entry in the store.

I started ExpenseClam a long time ago and there are a good number of issues that changes in the Android platform over the last few years have made hard to fix without some radical surgery to the app. I'd also like to extend support to iOS, so I've started the process of moving the code to Flutter to address both of these points. I'm also planning to move to a subscription model as the advert / one-time payment model doesn't allow me to fund the cloud backup approach I want to use.

There's no timeline on availability, but my personal target is first half of 2020.

Regards,

Colin.

I'm interested in your new project but, for now, is it possible to get the paid/upgrade version of Expense Clam? I have the free version, which I've been using for quite a while, and would love to turn off the ads and have the backup capability.

Can I add a new expense from unclaimed to and existing claimed expense?
