It was a glorious venue for a wedding. Bassenthwaite Water stretches out before it to the hills beyond. Even though we were indoors, when the couple getting married said their vows, the only other sound was birdsong. Later in the afternoon, guests paused to look out over the view.

By better chance than intention, our hotel was an easy walk from the venue. So easy, that we did walk. Coming back in the dark, the very dark, the only other vehicle to cross our paths was that of another event guest. There were cows, and a man with two dogs and no flashlight. C has a good flashlight app on his phone, so we were set; not that it's at all difficult to follow a two-way, paved road for <10 minutes at night in the dark.

Other things done: meals at the Drunken Duck and L'Enclume. A look around Cartmel Priory, which, according to the map, was surrounded by two now-long-gone lakes as of the thirteenth century. We gave walkers a lift back to Grasmere; I don't think they understood that part of their hour walk should have been off-road, which is why, two hours after they began, they were still walking. Crowds were arriving from the opposite direction for the Great North Swim on Windermere as we left, thronging the dock by the finish line. One of the best views of the expedition was recommended by Southey.

I LOVE the Lake District! It's one of the most beautiful places, possibly in the world.

That is a gorgeous view, what's the name of the place you stayed?

Two different questions. The photo is of the place where the wedding was held, Armathwaite Hall, on Bassenthwaite Water in the Lake District. We stayed just down the road at a Best Western.

I recognise that photo.

It's the room we got married in. :)

Why thank you. A's mother actually suggested it, and we were lucky they had an opening over a bank holiday weekend. They did a great job with event organisation, and I couldn't fault the food. I hope it was an enjoyable wedding to attend.

Availability is part of why this wedding on a Friday.

I was really impressed by the venue - it has a good variety of spaces we made use of, from the grandeur of the room in which the ceremony happened and the bar just outside, to the newer wing in which we had dinner and then another room again for post-dinner drinks and optional dancing. My favorite part of the site was the deck outside the dining room - really large, beautifully heated, relaxing views, intelligently surfaced, but tucked away enough it would not interfere should there have been simultaneous events in the main building. And the food was nicely done too. (Best: goat's cheese panna cotta with salad.)

It was a very satisfying wedding - a good variety of events including a quiz, nicely paced, pleasant people. I knew few of them, but we got on well and it was fantastic to see the bride and groom again. We last saw them over a year ago, when they'd just quit their jobs to spend a year traveling around the world together.
