The bus to the Tate Modern the other day passed by Westminster Abbey. I have never seen the lines to get in so long, wrapping around the block - the Royal Wedding effect. A large BBC truck was parked beside the building, as was a BT vehicle, laying the datalines to transmit large volumes of data next week.

But really, it was an email from a Germany-based tea & coffee company whose mailing list I am on which brought home the global scale of the thing: they began this month's advertising with a Royal Wedding mug and special tea blend.

Tomorrow begins ten days of national semi-shutdown. For three day's leave, an eleven day vacation. I imagine the airports will be packed.

Most people I know are avoiding the festivities like the proverbial Black Death. I may take a look at the dress and laugh at the silly hats, but otherwise I plan to ignore it all. And the motorways will be hell, so I'm planning to stay in Warwickshire unless R wants us to vosit her in Sidcup for her birthday on Sunday.

There's an entire reality TV show here about it. Wedding-mad women were taken to London to meet people that actually know Kate Middleton (of which there must be several thousand...),fondle royal wedding ring replicas, and taunt Horse Guards. Why this was worthy of advertising space I've no idea.

(In my defense, I fell asleep watching ST:TNG and woke up to... that. Finding out about it wasn't deliberate.)

I'm an on email list for a tea shop in Annapolis, MD, that I like to frequent when I visit my family, and just this morning they sent out an email advertising some sort of Royal Wedding tea or special or something-- I didn't look too closely before deleting.

ETA: I have dim memories of watching Charles & Diana's wedding on tv with my mom when I was very small. Out of what is probably just a misplaced sense of nostalgia, I'd sort of like to see the feed of the wedding, but I really don't care about who's wearing what and who did the flowers and who's invited and how much it cost and all that nonsense. I have been enjoying Stephen Colbert's preparations for the royal wedding. (I wonder if he ever got his invitation?)

No sign of any Royal Wedding hype here, thank goodness. I was somewhat tempted by the Not A Royal Wedding Mug, but haven't ordered one because I'm not actually anti-Royal family; I just have no interest in the wedding and I wish they'd downsize, like the Dutch or Danish royal family.

People in the states I encountered while visiting last week are *way* more excited about the royal wedding than most people I know in England. My grandmother is planning to watch the full coverage, regardless of how early she has to get up to see it. She actually remembers the current Queen's wedding and listening to it on the radio, so I guess there's some continuity for her.
