So... Miyazaki's committed to direct Diana Wynne Jones' Howl's Moving Castle. We already knew this. I read Howl and its sequel, Castle in the Sky, over break. Both are wonderful books.

Today, however, an email advertisement flitted into my inbox, saying that on April 17th, Disney will release the English versions on DVD/VHS of Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, and....

Castle in the Sky. I thought - did Miyazaki already direct the sequel to Howl? That would explain why he committed to the prequel! I looked further, and discovered it was all much less interesting than it looked. I'd heard of Laputa. I hadn't remembered it being subtitled Castle in the Sky. It's an entirely different movie, unrelated to the DWJ book.

I can see this being a source of confusion eventually, with DWJ fans renting/buying Laputa for the wrong reasons. Hopefully, they'll like it anyways. I've heard good things about it.

Laputa (like anything Miyazaki does) is completely amazing. It's actually the first of his movies I saw. It was unsubtitled and untranslated, but it was surprisingly easy for me and some friends to figure most things out. Long speeches were hopeless of course, but you can tell a lot from facial expressions and intonations. And the visuals were stunning. It's unclear right now if those DVD releases will contain Japanese audio tracks, and literal subtitled translations, or not. While the English voices are excellent for Spirited Away and Kiki's (haven't heard Laputa's), I would like to have the option. I'm not holding my breath however. The DVD release of Princess Monokoke was originally supposed to be English only, and only the howling from the fans changed their minds. April 17th is probably too close to add anything extra to the DVDs (maybe that's their plan).

Howl is absolutely the best DWJ book I've ever read (and one of the best I've ever read of anything!) and I've read lots of her books. Castle was charming and lovely. I want to reread it now that I know how it ends so I can see how all the plot bits were actually working out while I was busy being oblivious to them.

Happy to have made your day and found you a sequel to the bestest book ever!
