I'm an Iowa girl. I grew up with a heavy covering of snow each winter. England - at least when and where I've been here - has rarely had more than flakes. A centimeter is a heavy accumulation.

Last night was exciting - by the time i went to bed, a full inch of snow was on the ground. I took photos.

And this morning? Oh, it's glorious out! There's at least 4-5 inches of fluffy white beautiful snow out there. It's a REAL amount of snow!

Of course, as a result, there are several delays and cancellations on the Underground. i can't even get through to any of the mainline rail websites I've checked, although thanks to a FB update, I know that the trainline I need isn't currently running trains TO London, so would be unlikely to be running them away from London either. It's currently looking somewhat unlikely that I will be able to go to my Kent job. Today would be a beautiful day to be in Canterbury!

Edited to add: Thank you, BBC. I get through to the news, at least, which tells me
And all services are currently suspended until further notice on Southeastern Trains.
I also see that ALL London buses are currently suspended until further notice.

Actually, Canterbury isn't as lovely as you might suppose, unless you like the snow/grey sky thing, which is rather wonderful if damn ominous. I am snug on campus, in the café, drinking coffee and having a breakfast that is bad for me but ... There was not as much snow here as in London, and not that much more than in Folkestone, unusually, but the sky is the kind of leaden grey that means there is more, much more, to come, and I will be getting the hell out once I've finished my meetings at lunchtime.

Incredibly, at 7.30 a.m., main roads were all clear, the buses were running well, and it was incredibly easy to get around. Very few people travelling though. Given some of my experiences here in the last few years, this ease of travel seems little short of miraculous. I notice the SE Trains website is still dead (not even their emergency skeleton website) which is disturing.

Thank you for the update! I don't mind the grey skies because the snow itself is so luminous with the least provocation. Much as I would love to see Canterbury today, however, it's not worth braving the (lack of) transport.

I'm glad that transport is running well in some places with snow here, given how cautious the country is when it comes to all this white stuff. The forecast for Canterbury looks miserable - snow all day until rain in the evening. It could be quite icy there overnight.

There have been flurries, but frankly the problem today is the half inch from yesterday being compacted, smoothed and refrozen. It may yet Get Worse, but I've opened my window because I am too warm.

The forecast for Canterbury for the day is snow, heavy snow, snow, heavy snow, snow, (evening) rain, rain, clear skies.

I confess to having fallen asleep this afternoon, but I haven't noticed any heavy snow. Maybe I missed it.

Well - it was only a forecast.

I suspect it went wester than expected - the trains supposedly were going as far west as Tonbridge and Gillingham according to the signage at east station. And Medway schools were shut.

OTOH [livejournal.com profile] brisingamen has described heavy snow so either a) the campus on the hill was more exposed or b) I slept though the worst.

A train went under me this morning, so there is at least a Dover-Canterbury service. Or was.

Notices have Gone Up.

Southeastern finally has a website today, saying it's running limited coastal services, including Ramsgate to Faversham, but nothing into or out of London.

Despite its getting up into the 40s the last two days, Iowa still has a complete snow covering and a lot of ice on the sidewalks and driveways where the melt-off has refrozen.

I'm looking forward to photos of your garden (and whatever else) in the snow.

I'll go get the camera cable, especially as the sun is now setting so the snow photos are less satisfying now. It's STILL snowing!! Most of the groups of people who have walked by the front window have been throwing snowballs at each other.

Almost none of us - including me - are prepared for shoveling. We have no snow shovel. I'm not abusing the garden shovel on the task as I don't think it'll be necessary. C. accidentally broke the broom while cleaning for the party so we need to get a new one. But I expect this snow will all have melted within a few days.
