Greater London is very large. It can take a few hours to go somewhere within it. It is bigger than many countries are.

It is 1,579 km². If it were a country, it would be the world's 181st largest country in area. Okay, so it's larger only than very small countries. But still.

I really think of Greater London as being everything within the M25, which is a slightly larger area than that actually covered by the boroughs of Greater London. But while I can find the M25's length easily enough, I give up, for now, on finding the exact area it encompasses.

Hmm. Greater Sydney would ALSO be the world's 181st largest country by area, but we beat London by about 100 sq km. (At a total of 1687km sq.) London fits about four times as many people into it's allocated 1579km sq though...

Is the M25 the big ring-road which got a mention in Good Omens as the Dread Sigil Odegra?

It is indeed. Anybody reading that who had any experience of it immediately shouted "YES! That explains everything!"

If Crowley designed the M25, I think Aziraphale must be responsible for our M3-7 network. Big ringroads right around sydney and heading down to Canberra, and the only problem with them is that the soutmost one gets traffic jams at peak hour. The rest of time you can hop on in the northern suburbs and sail straight down and be halfway to Canberra before you know it... *sighs blissfully*

Nine times the size of DC.

Inspired by the famous heat transfer problem of a U.S. Thanksgiving turkey which begins, "OK, assume that the turkey is a hollow sphere..." we can estimate the area of greater London inside the M25 by knowing that it is 188km long, and using that as the circumference of a rough circle (actually it is not that far off), getting an area of 2812.5 km^2 (A=C^2/4pi). This puts it somewhere above the Palestinian territories (who knew they were that large?) and Puerto Rico (but does not turn out nearly as many Major League Baseball players).
