I've decided that we don't need to buy any living room furniture. We can construct it all out of our growing collection of enormous cardboard appliance boxes. Then I can paint it all in bright, cheery colors.

If I actually did this, it would work out something like this:

I've made for you a sofa-beast!
A sofa bear! A sofa, 'least
that's what I like to think it be,
a sofa thing for you and me.

I've made for you a flexi-plane!
A table, some would say again,
but I know better, flexy-thing,
so wide and flat and tied with string.

I've made for you a storage chair,
it has two shelves, and colors rare,
it's cheery, bright, and glows at night!
It's comfortable, if you are light.

I've made for you a ruggish flop,
it's padded - you can lie on top -
and if they're clean, please rest your feet.
It's smooth and soft and wrapped in sheet.

I've made for you a matching suite
of furniture, of sorts, complete,
of cardboad boxes, things and stuff:
it could break if you are too rough.

And so enjoy your furnished room
ornamented, in costume,
'twas nearly free, these things to me,
and nearly tasteful, you'll agree.

appliance boxes are still one of my favorite things...too bad Bri won't let me keep them and make pirate ships for the living room...

You need more pirate ships in your living room!

A living room isn't complete without at least one pirate ship.

Is Peppermint Beach 2 bright and cheery, or is that off-limits now? :)

Peppermint Beach 4 is certainly bright and cheery, so I expect the rest of the range to be so too! It's not off limits - it was merely unexpected! Perhaps what I need in my life is more Peppermint Beach.

I like playing with cardboard boxes.

Also, you could keep one and cut windows and doors for it, like a playhouse, and furnish it with mini-cardboard-box furniture!

Long ago, my grandmother used to design professionally cardboard toys and houses to fold up and assemble for a toy company. She has good taste. If she were up for it, I could ask her to design all our furniture out of cardboard!

I remember my friend [livejournal.com profile] miseri had to make a chair from cardboard in one of his early architecture classes - the thing he made, which involved lots of accordion pleats, was remarkably strong, in fact strong enough to support at least 300 lbs of person on it. I don't know if it would have held up well under extended use, though.

There are some very elegant and durable cardboard chairs in the world!
