I think this is the largest event I've ever been to in which nothing happened.

Tens of thousands of people had gathered to see the second-to-last scheduled event in La Machine's weekend-long performance. I'd structured my day around seeing it. Fortunately, I had also structured my day around the evening parade, which will still happen. From second-hand murmur, it sounds as if La Machine had cancelled the afternoon event without updating the media effectively-enough about it - or, indeed, their own website, as of Friday. (It has been updated since.)

They came to see a giant mechanical spider.

As a non-event, it was still pretty spectacular, and the weather finally cleared up and was beautifully sunny for it.

It didn't do anything? Great.. didn't do anytihng yesterday morning either - we went to see it first thing Friday and got soaked to the skin, glad you had sunshine to hang around pointlessly. Its a damn cool creation nonetheless.

I'm glad you got to see it on Friday! That sounded like a really good show from what I've read. I wore my raincoat, and it's just as well I did. I was only caught by spider-spray - I was well uphill from the finale, which involves a huge waterfall and waterfight and, well, a whole lot of water. Lots of people must have been *soaked*.

But yes! So big! So nifty!

we went to see the £1.8m spider on Sunday too, i dont believe they had changed the schedule for one minute. why else would there be so many stewards, police, 08 volounteers and first aiders there? the roads were closed ready for the spectacular that never was. London seemed to get much much more for their £1m. the organisers are pathetic, they have had all the summer holidays to stage this event and decide to wait for the schools to go back and do the finale on a Sunday night. words quite honestly fail me, we should hoist Warren Bradley up onto the side of Concourse House, then pull it down.

I was feeling more forgiving of them until I read yesterday's BBC article on the subject. It included this:

There was some disappointment earlier on Saturday when crowds turned up outside the Cunard building expecting a show which never materialised.
Nicky Webb, a director of Artichoke - the company producing the show - blamed the mix-up on cultural differences and said the French artists never intended to stick to a schedule.
She said: "For them the story is a piece of magic. They want the spontaneity of things not running according to our British clockwork... it doesn't work like that with a show like this."
Nevertheless, show organisers said La Princesse would once again reawaken on Sunday afternoon.

At least Sunday night's happened. And it finished on time, so some clockwork was working.

i can well believe the french artists see this as a piece of magic, if i could put invoices in that big and just turn up when i felt spontanious it would indeed be magic.
