The Omnivore's List

Memetically, this list has been in intensive circulation this week. Looking over it, what struck me most about the list is that I'm not sure if I've eaten at a three-star Michelin restaurant. Given my weakness for the occasional extravagant meal at highly-rated restaurants and a lifetime of generally good eating, I feel sure I must have along the way; but since I haven't been buying Michelin Guides or tracking stars, I can't tell you for certain that I have.

(Counting quickly, there are 26 items on the list I don't know for certain I've eaten.)

I had the same problem because I didn't really even know from Michelin ratings in the first place, so I had to go to the web site and see. Turns out there are only three 3-star ones on the NYC list in the first place.
I had no idea it was so incredibly selective.

Literally: birds and animals killed by traffic and picked up from the road. Everything from flattened hedgehogs (which no, I never have) to pheasants struck in flight (which yes, I have, which is why I could tick that one off the list). (There is a lovely rumour that here in England it is illegal to pick up a dead pheasant or other gamebird if you were the one that killed it, because that would be theft; but it's legal if someone else killed it and you just spot it on the road, because that's, I dunno, treasure-trove? Something. Finders keepers. I have no idea whether this rumour is true.)

I've heard about the pheasant story before. I was also told that's why its a good idea to travel in 2 cars. So the first one kills it and the second picks it up...

There are only three 3-starred restaurants in the UK at the moment (Fat Duck in Bray, Waterside Inn in Bray, Ramsay's on the Royal Hospital Road in Chelsea).

Yes, I was thinking that if I have been to a Michelin 3-star, then it was most likely when I was young with my parents in Italy or France. Or perhaps I've been to none at all.
