I've asked before about inexpensive places to stay. This time, I'm asking something more specific: what student halls have you stayed in in London and would recommend? Also, what about hostels?

I know I have this information scattered across emails and comments and I'll go trawling for those too, but thought I might be able to collate the information more efficiently for a soon-to-be-visiting friend from abroad with a post. (And to be really specific: She's looking for something fairly central for a two week stay in ~~June~~ May. Other answers to these questions, however, are still very welcome as they may be useful for other people.)

A long long time ago I used to stay in the student halls at King's College on visits to the UK - details on bookings/facilities here. Perfectly acceptable accomodation I recall. Good luck to your friend!

UCL has OK hall of residence accommodation. It's not fancy but it's tolerable.

I've a friend who did very well staying at LSE one summer. (Don't know which hall, but with luck she - or someone else who's stayed there - will comment too.) Availability starting from the 5th of June. http://www.lse.ac.uk/collections/vacations/

UCL is very convenient for the British Library. My daughter lived in Schafer House last year, just north of the Euston Road. It was OK; I think they have some rather more upmarket places in the Gower Street area. I don't know if SOAS does vacation lets, but their halls are on the Pentonville Road, also very convenient.

I've stayed at Canterbury Hall (hah, perfect for a medievalist!) both times I've been in London, and it's worked quite well for me. The hall is literally a two minute walk across the street from the British Library, and fees in the summer run about £35 a night for a single room, which includes breakfasts. It's nicely situated between the Kings Cross/St. Pancras and Euston stations, and a brief walk to Russell Square. Every room also has an ethernet connection. I've been there in both July and August; the second time I overlapped partially with some noisy teenagers who liked talking in the hallways at full volume until 2 or 3 in the morning, but otherwise it's been quite nice.

The thing that makes it trickier is that I'm actually arriving 14 May and sticking around in London for nearly two weeks, and I think that most universities are still in session then. (It was just when the trip fit best for me this summer, sadly.)

Most of my time will be at the BL, for location preferences, though I certainly don't mind a walk or a tube ride if need be.

Thanks for the suggestion! When I was a kid, my family used to sometimes stay at another place on Cartwright Gardens, but this is decidedly cheaper (without en suite).

Lillian Penson Hall near Paddington is good enough--I lived there for a year, anyway. It's a grad student dorm, so you don't have to put up with undergrads.

Both G and my dad had luck at the London Economics School residences. They're on the bankside and they both had good experiences there.

I've stayed at Canterbury Hall, an intercollegiate hall about five minutes' walk from the BL. It's only open to non-University of London students when classes aren't in session, so May could be too early, but it's a great working location. The rooms are small, Spartan, simply furnished and can get very hot on summer days. They come with two meals a day, and the rooms have Ethernet connections.

We've used International Student House for our youth hostel accommodations for the overnight trips that the Society runs to London - www.ish.org.uk

Don't forget Goodenough College (formerly London House and William Goodenough House)in Mecklenburgh Square, Bloomsbury. Although it is designed primarily for long-stay fellowships, I believe there are some short stay accommodations.

It was failing to hear back in time from London House that meant my friend needed to go looking for alternate accommodation in the first place. (I was excited at the prospect of her staying there, but given they still haven't said they have room for her and her dates are coming up rather soon, odds aren't looking good.)

Thank you again for doing this! I ended up making a booking with a B&B that was one of the first recommendations I got. It's still reasonably close, and for a stay that long, the cost is comparable to some of the student accommodation.

I'd love to at least be able to wave in your general direction while I'm there, but if you're up for dinner or something one evening, that would fun. I'll be in London 14-26 May.
