[livejournal.com profile] fjm has just started a community for discussing non-fiction about science fiction: [livejournal.com profile] nonficawards. If you're at all interesting in the subject, go and participate.

Via [livejournal.com profile] fs_appetizers, I read of Tim Hanni, a major wine advisor to restaurants in the states. He's an advocate of an unusual system, which suggests wines based on peoples' sensitivity to taste. As someone who comes out as borderline sensitive/hyper-sensitive to tastes and prefers sweeter wines, I thought this an idea worth pursuing. Click a few boxes and tell me how accurate the Budometer was for you?

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] j_bluestocking, I have encountered Jonathan Coulton, a musician whose career is based around his online success in self-promotion, including blogging. He gives away his songs, or sells them for a US dollar each. I recommend especially "Re: Your Brains" and "Skullcrusher Mountain". (I've linked to videos made by fans with these songs, but you can listen without the distraction of images from the composer's site.) But the song of his actually stuck in my head is the one [livejournal.com profile] j_bluestocking linked to in the first place: the closing theme to the game Portal, "Still Alive".

I'm in the hyper-sensitive category but up toward the sweet end of it (between 2 and 3), which I find very interesting. They're on the money with the French and Chilean chardonnays, and I also like a white Zinfandel (recommended for the sweet range).

I came out as hypersensitive, but on the sensitive side of that (between 3 and 4). They're on the money with Rieslings and Chardonnays, but I'm not sure about the rosés. All the wines in the "sensitive" section work for me too (especially Sauvignon Blanc, which I adore). I was "between" a lot of the answers on the Budometer, so my guess is that I'm probably right between sensitive and hypersensitive like you.

I love the Ikea song and the codemonkey song...if you haven't heard them yet...

I've heard the Codemonkey one, but not Ikea. I'll go listen.

Tastebud thing quite wrong for me. It offered me light whited and rose whereas I like things like Margaux.

Interesting -- I'm smack in the middle, but am not a fan of merlots at all. I like cabernets, zins, and love good Barolos. It was close on the whites, but I drink very few chardonnays. But then, this is more about wines by themselves, I think. I prefer to pair my wines with foods, so there are times when I can like almost all wines (although in some company I never, ever, ever suggest a chardonnay!)

It plunked me right on the line between Sweet and Hypersensitive - as far as the whites go, I think that's very accurate.

But by a strict reading of that scale, I shouldn't like reds at all - I didn't used to, actually. But reds have grown on me through exposure - to the point, actually, where I like some reds better than even whites. Shiraz is my favorite, which I guess fits with the scale in that Shiraz is closer to "my" end of it. I should probably be a lot closer to 4-5 than it pegs me for, but I can't get any halfway honest combination of the questions to put me there.

Scratch that. I got what I feel is the proper placement on the scale by answering all the questions accurately...

...except for my gender.

My place on the scale (like sweets!) is accurate so far as it goes, except that I rarely drink wine at all unless it's the only beverage available, because it always tastes too dry to me - I like some of the sweeter fortified wines, eiswein, some ciders (though that's more green_trilobite's thing), but mainly I go for cocktails if I'm going to drink alcohol.

Just read green_trilobite the quiz - he ranks about a four on their scale (low end of hypersensitive), which seems right.
