Five hours - The time spent in the Des Moines airport waiting for Chicago to give us a landing spot, and thus the time by which our first flight was late. O'Hare was limiting landing spots due to high wind gusts and then, to add to the delays, cleared its airspace for a VIP.

Half-an-hour - The amount of time in which we theoretically could have caught the 6-something flight to London, the one after the one we were originally scheduled on. The lovely gate assistant was halfway through giving us seats on the flight when her supervisor insisted she close the gate. We were willing to wait - it gave us time for dinner.

Two-and-a-half hours - The time spent in the choppy belt of storms and wind over the Great Lakes and Canada. ("We'll clear this in half an hour." "It's been half an hour and it's gotten worse. Don't worry, we'll go higher soon and it'll be smoother." "Oh look, we're higher now, and it's even more choppy up here." And so on.)

Ten minutes - The time spent waiting in the really slow missing luggage bag to file a claim for our third bag before I got bored and wandered off to look at more of the many stray piles of luggage lying around the terminal. Our duffel, it turns out, had been enterprising and caught the previous flight.

Two hours - The time it took to get from Heathrow to Temple, where the District line, already laboring under severe delays, shut down entirely for repairs. We gave up and took a taxi.

Thank you. *hug* We had nothing else planned for today other than recovery, which was just as well, given then delay. Tomorrow, work begins again.

It could have been worse. For a while there, we were resigned to spending the night in Chicago. Stormy season really isn't the time to travel if you can help it.

All this and jetlag too. Sorry you had such a foul ending to your break. Now get some rest.

I had a lovely, tranquil rest of the day. The real challenge is how long I can stay awake today working from home.

Sorry to hear about plane/travel ickiness, but at least you're back on the ground, safe and sound. :)

It's so nice not to need to travel much anytime soon! (The only place I know I'm going out of town this month is Birmingham.)

I thought that the security rules now meant that if the passenger isn't on board, their luggage doesn't go onboard either?

Anyway, at least you and all your effects are back home safely now :-)

Presumably that's only true for the first flight in a series of connections? Baggage goes astray all the time and still makes it back to its intended destination, so it can't be true of connections I would think. Rebooking and rerouting also happens so frequently and it's hard for luggage to keep up when you've suddenly been rerouted through an extra city or two.

i'm glad you got home, even though you had the journey of doom! :)

did you get my email, perchance?

I don't know that you sent me email anytime even vaguely recently. Email wasn't getting through today until just now though, so if it was within the past 12 hours, it may not have arrived yet.

The journey wasn't even that doomish, sadly - this was just a somewhat non-functional instance of travel. Doomish trips are far more aggravating.

ugh. Hugs, hot water bottles and cozy evenings to you. Perhaps some hot chocolate in a comfortable chair?
