"entoptic phenomenon" - Look at a light source. Close your eyes. The lights and movement now seen are entoptic phenomena.

An ophthalmologist and family friend attending my grandmother's 90th birthday observed party today provided the term at a moment's notice when called upon for a label for the effect in the middle of a speech. Eventually, the late morning rain clouds cleared enough that we could experience blue sky entoptic phenomena for ourselves.

An excellent term. There's no reason why knowing it should make me enjoy the brightly-coloured glowing inside my eyelids any more than I did before - but somehow it will.

'blue sky entoptic phenomena'

I always thought that was odd - now I know there's a name for it :-)
