As someone who lives in London, I'm not very knowledgeable about places to stay. A friend of mine will be visiting in late July/early August and would like a pleasant B&B (or hotel), centrally located or at least near an tube stop, and ideally not too expensive. She'll be staying there for at least a week. Any recommendations?

The Bankside residence of the London School of Economics is where I ended up in September after my hostel turned out to be, erm, bug-infested. They were great!

I don't really know if this is competitive for London, but when I was a kid, we stayed at the Harlingford Hotel, which is quite close to Euston, Russell Sq., St. Pancras, and King's Cross. Single is 79/night...is this reasonable for London? It's not part of a big corporation, which may or may not be an attraction.

I don't know of any either, but this site should be useful, I hope!

http://www.blacklionguesthouse.com/ has been recommended by several perl mongers in the past

Another useful website for a clearing-house service: http://www.londonbb.com/. The listings have helpful pricing categorizations, descriptions (including whether the B&B is near a tube station), and reviews from former guests. A friend who's used the service highly recommended a single listing in West London, which shows up as "B63A Stamford Brook." I'll be staying there myself later this month and could give you a review when I'm back in early June, if you're interested.

I liked the Tavistock Hotel in Russell Square...though the last time I was in London was almost a decade ago--I have no idea what the hotel's like these days.

When I was there I stayed at Base2Stay. It was 80 (pounds) per night which seems hideous in retrospect but I gather is actually considered cheap, was in Kensington, right by a tube station AND had a microwave oven and fridge so you could make your own meals, in fact they encouraged you to do so.

Barston Gardens, 2 mins from Earls Court, is on the right tube line for most sightseeing places, so not too much extra faff. Nice food, friendly, good rates (cheaper than travel inn types), nice size rooms. Not modern, but very nice. Josie loved it.

I'm the same way about Beirut and New York - at a total loss for hotel recommendations.

If she's staying a week or more, tell her that she might be able to negotiate a further price discount directly with the hotel.

I don't really know what's a good rate and what's not, but when I went to London in 2000, my mom and I stayed at The Euro Hotel in Russell Square. It was an excellent location with comfy rooms and a tasty free breakfast.
