Yesterday, while compiling this post, I browsed through the Wikipedia's listing of births, deaths, and other major events which occurred on April 23rd. I read through superficially, copying over names which stood out of people who had died on that day in years past. I wasn't paying attention to years since I wasn't calculating anniversaries -

- which is why I didn't notice that the year listed by Boris Yeltsin's name was 2007. I noted his name was at the end of the list and presumed 2006, thinking it was something I'd forgotten or somehow missed the news in the first place. It wasn't until C. came home and I told him about all the things which happened on this day in the past that we figured it out. He was surprised that Yeltsin had died last year - that was news to him. And then we looked at the BBC News page - and Yeltsin's death was the headline.

As soon as news happens, it becomes history.

Yeah, somebody on LJ yesterday was listing Shakespeare, Cervantes, then added "and Yeltsin," and I thought they meant a year or two ago, and wondered how I could have let it go over my head... Mind you, we had a nasty subway accident in Toronto yesterday, so I wasn't paying much attention to international news.

Wikipedia's actually getting a reputation for breaking news before the 24-news networks. It's weird.

I didn't know he was dead until I read your journal entry and I understood it that he 'died today', even though you didn't realise it when you wrote it...

Odd. And odd also as I'm reading a book at the moment (Den Enda Segern, Jan Guillou) in which he figures as a character.

Actually, by the time I posted the post I knew he had died. I was only mostly done writing the post before C. got home and we figured it all out.

There are so many fictionalized versions of historical characters - I don't know why it seems odder to know someone was fictionlized in their own lifetime.
