At moonrise, a circle brushed with lurid orange and striped with blued clouds rose through the buildings and trees beyond a parking lot. The moon was alien and lovely.

At totality, the moon was brushed in umber, red-tinged muddy brown. That umber was us, this planet, shining back its glow to its satellite. The moon is our moon, close enough to run through our shadow now and again. It didn't seem alien at all.

I'm envious. All I saw was cloud cover.

If the reddish color is the result of the earth's atmosphere, then an eclipse of the sun when seen from the moon must be amazing: the earth surrounded by a brilliant halo of sunset. Someday, someone will see it, though probably not in my lifetime.

I like the Italian phrase for a lunar eclipse -- luna rossa. Any idea what it was called in English before our language was burdened by that ponderously latinate and scientific label?

What a lovely description. We watched the eclipse from the terrace. Using the new binoculars I received for Christmas, we were able to see the moon as a pristine sphere hanging among the stars.

The afternoon here was clear and bright, but then cloudcover rolled in over, in essence, the entire Northeastern US. We couldn't see the moon at all, but we saw particularly fluffy snow, which was pretty in itself.
