Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] hobbitblue, I'm listening to Tom McRae's new forthcoming album, all free online right now at a "listening party". I don't know who he is, but the first several tracks I've sampled are appealing.

India's National Mission for Manuscripts - a collection of 1.8 million+ scanned in manuscripts of all kinds.

A fourteenth-century brass astrolabe quandrant, for sale in London next month.

New earliest evidence for chile cultivation in South America, 6100 years ago (approximately).

My family will appreciate this one: when I was young, I liked a little beer in my milk. I lost my taste for that by the time I was five or six. Indeed, I haven't really liked beer since. But I'm not the only one with taste for this flavor combination. A Japanese brewery is turning surplus milk into beer.

Love your icon - it's a new one, yes?

Yes it is! This is the first time I've used it. C. took the photo yesterday, and I got the Playmobil laptop last week. It came with a glacier and a dinosaur skeleton among other things. It is SO exciting to have a Playmobil laptop!

I too like the icon, but I can't figure out why a laptop, a glacier, and a dinosaur skeleton should all come together. Many years ago in Punch (a magazine that existed many years ago) there was a contest in which readers were invited to compose a letter for a new bride who had received three very different gifts from three different people, and had no idea who sent which. The letter was supposed to cover all three bases in the most natural way possible. I'm trying to imagine what possible letter the new bride could compose if the three confused items were a laptop, a glacier, and a dinosaur skeleton.

Wow! Real milk-beer! I'd actually like to try it sometime since I never have so far.

And "The Talisman Ring" is just as silly and engrossing as you said. Thanks for the recommendation.

Demand is high so far, so it might be a while before it's available in any quantity even in Japan.

You're very welcome!

mmm, beermilk! Everyone I've mentioned it to thinks it sounds disgusting, and for all I know maybe I would think it is now; but at the time, I LOVED it.
