Happy World Nutella Day! In honor of the event, I spent part of the evening baking a batch of Nutella cookies. I used the classic Joy of Cooking peanut butter cookie recipe and replaced the peanut butter with Nutella. They're light and buttery, with a gentle Nutella flavor. I would have prefered a stronger flavor - perhaps Nutella brownies would have been the way to go! Half the cookies are topped with chopped, toasted hazelnuts, the other half are plain - they're good either way.

(The flash warms the cookies' color to more that of peanut butter cookies - in fact, they're more of a Nutella-esque brown.)

*breaks out in hives*
*windpipe closes*
*dies a horrible hazelnut-induced death*

Thank you! (Not for dying; for commenting. Don't die!) I knew I knew someone allergic to hazelnuts and I couldn't for the life of me think who it was. I worried I was in danger of giving someone in London hazelnut-infested cookies. Of course, now it'll turn out that half the people I know have hazelnut allergies despite what I was remembering.

If only I'd known!

Ah well, I made it a hot chocolate day.

Nutella could be a really nice base for making hot chocolate, now that I think of it.

It does make an excellent base for hot chocolate - I've tried it. Just whisk it into some whole milk while it's heating on the stove!

Thank you for the endorsement of the idea! I never did try it. I have Nutella in the house, but not milk, so the next time I do....

I think nutella is very nice, but ... it just kind of seems wrong to me. So wrong, that I've never been able to bring myself to buy it, except when we lived in Augsburg and there was great social pressure to have it in the house. Chocolate is a staple in Germany, you know -- you can't go to the market and see a trolley or basket sans Schokolade ... but so much of it is milk chocolate, which I prefer to avoid. Give me that dark stuff, thanks!

OMG. I need to bake those. Hellyeah. I love hazlenuts, and even if the idea of eating nutella on toast for breakfast breaks gears in my brain, baking with it is simply inspired!!!
