Fog on the Thames

London's been cloaked in fog for the past few days, with more forecast to come. The hours of daylight are so few, and the fog makes it darker. Today the groundlevel cloud lifted up until it was merely very overcast for a few hours in the afternoon before night resumed again, a day of gloom and cloud tendrils. London's not usually like this - it reminds me more of my time in York than anything else. The fog is persistent enough that all domestic flights were cancelled earlier today and most other flights around the country have been seriously delayed. Also, it's freezing out - literally - which, with fog, is no good combination.

Yesterday, [livejournal.com profile] geesepalace and I went for a handful of walks along different parts of the Thames. It wasn't earlier than 11 am when I took this photo of the lurid light on the water, midday sun in the depths of winter. Admire the complete absence of skyscrapers on the left-hand side of the river, and the total lack of Greenwich in the middle.

That's beautiful.

Sometimes I feel it's not so much Global Warming as Global Weirding we've unleashed on ourselves. Toronto has been mild and snowless all month. Meanwhile they've got blizzards to the south of us.

That's why I prefer to talk about Global Climate Change - the average temperature goes up, but everywhere gets a random new climate.

Our skies look about the same, yep.

where did you take that pic? I feel as though I should recognise it given what you say about it...

I took it on one of the Thamesides places along Narrow St. - I took them from several of those, so I don't know exactly which one this is - probably east of the Narrow St. Dining Room and west of the foot bridge. I exaggerate in my caption - you actually wouldn't quite be able to see the skyscrapers from here, but I have other photos of the absence of skyscrapers from around this point which are entirely surreal.

Nice pic -- very moody.

Wonderful photograph! -- esp with the bird across the sun. And I like being able to enjoy the view and the weather indoors this time.

Thank you! The bird was good timing. I have another good bird photo from that same set - a slew of birds flying across the fog shrouding Canary Wharf.

Thanks for taking that gorgeous photograph--nice to see what's happening in the other parts of the world.

And if this posts twice, sorry--LJ ate the first comment.

You're welcome! (And your other comment didn't come through. LJ was very thorough in its eating.)
