And that's it. I have it. A single piece of paper in an envelope arrived sometime while I was away, and in it is my very own NI number. The card itself will take another 2-4 weeks to arrive.

The only hard part was getting ahold of the NI registration services in the first place, and that complication was caused by a fit of bad timing on my part crossed with a change of systems on theirs. After that, it was all very straightforward.

The last part of the letter with my number in it irked me on pricipal however. After giving the boilerplate "if you change your name or address let us know" information, it goes on to say, "If you are a woman, please also contact your local Social Security Office if you get married, get divorced, are widowed, or have your marriage annulled." Not if you're anyone at all. Only if you're female. The system isn't quite where it could be yet.

That's it, get your NI card with a minimum of fuss whilst I strained and struggled to be allowed an SSN... ;)

Only to spite you, of course.

I know anecdotally that the US is paperwork intensive for anything having to do with immigration. (My sister's husband just applied for the green card - the paperwork for landed residency in the UK was a breeze by comparison to what they've had to put together for that application.) What are the particular twists to getting a SSN?

The twists were essentially trying to apply for an ITIN first and being told I wasn't allowed one because I hadn't included a piece of paper that, er, the form told me not to include; then having to get a 'job' to make me eligible for the SSN. It took about six months to get all the paperwork that showed I was allowed to have one, by which point it was all a bit silly and getting uncomfortably close to tax season.

Intensive and expensive! I wonder how much of the "women" thing is name changes? In which case, since it's still easy to change names by deed poll(I think it's called), shouldn't it just say, in case of name change?
