One Corpse too Many, Ellis Peters - My first Peters Book! A charming tale of murder, in which, with the exception of a slew of deaths at the beginning, All The Right Things Happen To All The Right People.

Acorna's Triumph, Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Anne Scarborough - The perky soap opera continues. I'd rather like to read the book of which this one read like a summary.

Drumline (movie) - It feels like a documentary about marching bands with token moralistic plot about Working With Others for framework.

Bring It On Again (movie) - I had meant to order the prequel, but apparently didn't. A mockumentary about the sport of cheerleading with token plot about teamwork. Not actually funny.

Fantastic Four (movie) - Better than I thought it might be, and reasonably entertaining. The best-done bits are the sequence in which the foursome start manifesting their powers.

Computer repair shop - The infrastructure seems competent, and it came with reasonable online recommendations. I was only mildly taken aback when, for the first time for me with computer repairs, I had to pay for the intial assessment in advance. Also, it will be 8-10 working days before assessment even occurs, due to backlog.

Bloglines - I accidentally marked all my first feeds as read after clicking on the folder icon in the hopes that something rather different would happen. Other than my apparent inability to mark something as unread once it is read, it seems like a promising service to tide me back over to my own working machine and possible desktop-based rss readers. Speaking of working machines, my loaner laptop is in good shape now that I've copied over my preferences and mail files and suchlike. I can once again read email in a normal fashion.

LJTalk - What a clever idea! LJTalk is based on Jabber, the same chat protocol that GoogleTalk uses - among other services - and so are all interoperable. I'm still getting to know Psi as a client - I realized late last night that the reason nothing was happening with my client was because all events were showing up very discreetly and in such a way as I would never notice unless I went looking. I'll fix that then. C. speculates that LJTalk will do more to raise Jabber's profile than GoogleTalk does, since no one ever talks about the protocol when they mention G'Talk.

Oh, that reminds me to look for Never Been Thawed! When I wanted it in March Amazon said out on DVD in April.

I use and recommend Bloglines. It allows you to keep back specific feed items, by checking off the tickybox marked 'Keep New', but not an entire feed/session slice.

You should read _A Morbid Taste for Bones_, the first Cadfael book. Then, you should try her 20th-century sleuth, Inspector Felse. Same border country, very small-town setting.

Thank you for the recommendation! I liked the first one I read and there are many more out there waiting for me to read for the first time.

That pretty well sums up all the Cadfael books.

That's a relief. Happy escapist murder novels.

I used to love Anne McCaffrey - the early Pern books (even up to Masterharper of Pern), the Killashandra series... I can't read the new stuff though.

I think I must keep reading out of habit. It's been years since she produced anything I'd actually endorse. The thing is, I really like books that Elizabeth Anne Scarborough has written in the past - which combined with the ongoing input from A.M. is just enough incentive to keep reading the Acorna series despite all its flaws.

For the last decade or so, her series have all gone soap opera which all the Requisite Recurring Characters.

I will say that the sequel to Acorna's Triumph (which I read just this evening...) is a notable improvement on A.T. since it effectively restarts the series with a new main character. Not good particularly - but much better and more more coherent.

Hmmm... well, if I'm feeling the need to read fluff I might have to look that up.

I'm very fond of Ellis Peters's books, and her Edith Pargeter ones too. Admittedly because All the Right Things Happen to All the Right People it's almost always possible to guess the ending, but I still find them fun. I have most of them, including all the C20th Felse books and the one-offs, if you ever want to borrow any.

Thank you for the lovely offer! I'll investigate the local library's options first, but it's good to know that if I become compulsive about reading them, you can aid me.

I like Ellis Peters, although I got tired after about 7 books. Never read the Acorna books -- are they any good? And Drumline is a guilty pleasure -- it's an ABC Afterschool Special with good acting and really good music. I'm a sucker for brass bands and marching bands, though. Plus, I like the Orlando Jones character, who is the kind of academic-leaning person it would be nice to have in the Big Draw Program.

The Acorna books are easy reading, and I've made it through all eight of them (and counting) so far over the years they've been coming out. I can count on them to have happy endings. They're not particularly well-written, but there are the odd ingious ideas along the way. Mostly very very fluffy though - but good if what you want is completely fluffy easy-to-read escapism. I wouldn't particularly recommend them in their own right, but I would to fulfull the fluffy niche.

I did like out the Working With Others plot of Drumline didn't work out in quite the usual way. Close, but not quite.

I like Bloglines - I find it useful as a way to "try out" people on LJ if you don't want to "friend" them right away, and also for the obvious like the Guardian, weather reports etc. They have a nifty little menu bar thing "sub with bloglines" that you can stick on your menu bar and it automatically subscribes to anything that you're reading. Like a de.lic.ious button.

Cute dogs! My sister's favorite kind of cute dog, in fact. I particularly like the way they're set off by the flowers.
