There is little in life so satisfying as having one's books finally in order (with nearly enough bookshelf space for the most necessary of them)...

except for the satisfaction of a truly fabulous jar of Apple and Elderflower Chutney -

and except for the very great pleasure of a leisurely wander around the Borough Market in delightful company of [livejournal.com profile] fjm, [livejournal.com profile] miramon, and [livejournal.com profile] matociquala (who offered to send me popcorn if I should become desperate for sources of it!).

On Monday, I ran out of A4 printing paper.
On Tuesday, I found there were no stationers in Canary Wharf, so no printing paper could be purchased there.
On Wednesday, I found that the company from which I was mail ordering printing ink charged for postage purely based on weight - so paper wasn't worth ordering from them.
On Thursday, I found that all the stationers in the City close at 6pm - and I arrived there around 6:15.
On Friday, I went to the Borough Market and bought A4 printing paper. (Well... across the street from it.)

Holland and Barrett sell popping corn. Tescos keep it in the Jamaican section.

Excellent. Waitrose only stocks microwave popcorn. I knew in theory it should be easy to buy, but it was never quite urgent enough to go looking for it. You've now made it very easy indeed. I wouldn't have thought to look in the Jamaican section though.

Still, it was a charming offer.

me neither.

I'm addicted to yeast powder on it. If that's to your taste, make sure you buy "debittered" yeast powder from HB (I can't get the flakes tho which is what I really like)

I've never heard of yeast powder. Yeast and yeast extract, yes, but not yeast powder. Or yeast flakes. Other than popcorn topping, what would you use them for?

it's used in beer brewing.

I acquired the taste while at a Quaker college in 1994. Popcorn with yeast flakes was about as exciting as snack food got. Unless you hankered after cottage cheese.

There's a whole cookbook devoted to uses for yeast flakes! (At least one brand of them. They claim they're a reasonable cheese substitute on the basis of flavor, but surely not on the basis of texture. But of what kind of cheese do they taste?)

I knew yeast was used in brewing, but it never occurred to me what kind of yeast. Clearly I should know more about yeast - for history of brewing and baking reasons, if nothing else.

Sainsburys sell popping corn (with the lentils etc, I think). We have recently discovered next day deliveries from Staples (order online) - and quite reasonable even if you don't order very much.

Thank you! Sainsburys also carries a line of products which includes reasonably-priced bags of black beans.

Up until this minute, I hadn't a clue where my nearest Sainsbury's was. Now I do - and I also now know why I didn't know - none of the closest five are the least bit convenient for me. But I'm sure there's a centrally-located one which shall be.

I can see why I was scared off of the Staples online site - it claims it's for business customers only. Do they offer free shipping over X pounds or other such reasonable way of ordering cheap-and-heavy supplies?

I first used them to order packing materials when I was clearing a house. The local branch didn't stock what I wanted and suggested I shop online. I simply entered by business as 'home' and have used them again since. I cannot remember the packing charges, I'm afraid.

I have more popcorn than I need - you can have a bag of it if you like.

Waitrose Food and Home in Canary Wharf may have A4 printing paper; I'm not sure. I'll look next time I'm there, I know there is some sort of stationery section upstairs and also a bit that has electronics and computer accessories, so there's a good chance. Somewhere like Dixons might also, and there is a Tesco Metro floating around somewhere which might have it. ASDA at Crossharbour definitely does, but that might be a bit further than you wanted to go.

Are you sure? I'm always happy to relieve donors of popcorn. Alternatively, I now have a nice list of places where it can be purchased.

I suspected the ASDA would stock it, but it didn't even occur to me to look at the Waitrose or Tesco - didn't seem their style.

And if you ever need a care package from the US, let me know ... I've never had a problem finding my Asian food needs in the UK, and now you can get a few decent Mexican ingredients, but it was truly hellish in Germany. Nowadays, the only thing I sometimes have trouble finding is pickle for my sandwiches -- There seems to be a rush on it at Cost Plus whenever they ger a shipment of Branston in, and the other shop that carries it charges outrageous prices. Don't know how New Town will be ...

What a lovely offer! Let me know if I can provide you with a pickle delivery in a few weeks.

I think I might have it covered this trip. But I'll certainly let you know. Thanks!
