I don't think I'm in Canada anymore, Toto...

This is the first time that there've been Olympics while I have a television in the house. We tuned in to watch the last few sets of pairs figure skating-short form this evening, after which the commentater had something to say. (Approximately) "While watching such graceful skating, it's easy to forget that there's another Olympic sport which is far less so. Rough, even. Ice Hockey."

Britain is so not an ice hockey country that on the excerpts from today's women's hockey matches, as broadcast on the BBC, which has extensive Olympics coverage of its own, the commentary was done by someone from the US or Canada.

P.S. I've really enjoyed reading all about all the different basic cookbooks you all use. More on that in the next few days.
P.P.S. I had a new London thrill today: actually organizing dinner with friends not half an hour before it happened. I've never been a part of anything in London which was organized for the same day. The same week is usually pretty speedy going for logistics around here.

Britian is so not an ice hockey country I've had to explain the concept of high-sticking.
(Course, I'd be similarly clueless when faced with cricket, so I guess it evens out.)

I don't think I've ever seen ice hockey even in passing. In fact, my sole experience of it is from Canadian or adopted-Canadian friends.

The UK has at least 2 women's hockey teams - the Guildford thunder and the Streatham whatdoyoucallems. The only reason I know this is that a friend of mine used to play for those teams.

You'd think with such an obsession with field hockey in recollections of the zeitgeist of youth that women's hockey would be a bigger deal. (Not that I'm one to talk. I've only seen hockey in the movies. I have this idea that it's played by human-shark hybrids who can regrow their own teeth.)

A friend of mine has played for the Oxford women's hockey team, which makes three. There's enough for a league, so there are clearly more of them hiding around this country. Of course, my Oxford friend is really a visiting Canadian.

Actually, I think forced field hockey in girls schools is possibly why there is so little enthusiasm. Men think of field hockey as a sport only played by girls attending a certain type of school (and therefore not manly enough) and many women resent it (along with netball) because we hated PE at school.

Yes, I know I am a post late.

I have a book given to me as a wedding present called 'The Complete Cookery Book'. It contains no receipes at all - just directions to which cut of meat is which, how to prepare fish, how to make a white sauce, how to make mayonnaise, choux pastry, victoria sponge, brandy snaps, how to serve squid, how to temper chocolate, the difference in the spices, herbs, essences etc....

It's fab.
