It's been so long since we last lit a candle that we set up the candles and Christmas incense and were ready to burn them when we discovered we had no matches. And never had bought matches in the entire time we've lived here.

We could improvise with the toaster, but we're not feeling like tempting fate or the fire alarm tonight. We have a nearly-clean apartment and I have nearly-finished dissertation edits. A houseguest arrives tomorrow.

This is the first time I've been this close to a self-imposed dissertation-related deadline and felt tranquilly ready to meet it. And this deadline is the one that matters most - the ultimate one.
