Learned yesterday: I know an unexpectedly large number of people who've travelled in helicopters and hot air balloons. And, despite the recent spate of first-time fliers, thus far 100 percent of poll respondents have flown on a plane - although for five of you, your first time was within the past year. Far more of you have been flying since before you can remember flying - or so I suspect from the large numbers of people who started flying 20-40 years ago.

I had scarce posted yesterday's poll on planes when all sorts of new related pollish enquiries developed. Hence, a second in as many days. Also, I started wondering about boats - but they can wait for another week. Anyways, they'd make the poll too spammy.

[Poll #649288]

That should, of course, be "I have love/really enjoy flying on airplanes." But you knew that.

The "other" was to attend a funeral. Attending weddings I grouped under a visit to friends.

I remember the meal I had on my first flight. It was 1972, I was 7 and we were going to Florida to visit my grandparents. We all dressed up for the flight. We flew Northeast Airlines, a.k.a. "Yellowbird." I brought "The Aristocats" to read. I loved the little lunch tray with each element sized and shaped to fit like puzzle pieces. Dessert was key lime pie, my first.

Oops, didn't catch the fine print at the end.

Anyway, the 'Other' I put, was flying for a funeral, which doesn't quite fit in with "to visit family". I got reimbursed partially for that flight, for that matter.

On the fine print - I interpreted that as a possible past tense reply.

In the past, I enjoyed flying very much. I loved taking plane trips.

That is no longer the case. It's all a big uncomfortable hassle now.

Well, I've flown for funerals, but also to move house, once to Georgia, once to Germany, and then back to California.

Does flying to go study elsewhere count as "unfunded work"? I put it under "other" (been to Cambridge and Toronto for summer school). And I've moved via plane ... I guess that is "other" as well.

Well ok, one might have love on airplanes, but that's really discouraged - and how the heck can two people fit in those bathrooms, anyway? I barely fit!

I noticed that you left out crop-dusting and war. (Or do those fall under the heading of business?)

Point. Have you been in a crop-dusting plane?

I suspect they'd count as business, although it certainly wasn't what I had in mind.

My "others" include a school exchange trip to France in high school (not really a vacation) and flying to Regina to attend an international Girl Guide camp. (actually, both of those trips were within a year or so of each other - and were the last time I flew anywhere.)

My "other" was a flight to Nashville to go on retreat at a convent there, incidentially it was also the first time I flew alone.

This reminded me that I actually flew on a plane about 25 years ago, when I was a baby. I'm pretty sure I said my first flight was something like 12 years ago, which is the first time I remember flying.

I should explain why I didn't check off the third from last box in the last category--I used to love flying in planes. About ten or so years ago, the last time I flew business (well, the first and last time), that was the last time I really enjoyed flying. Ever since, the philosophy has been cram-cram-cram into small-smaller-smallest spaces, and while the flight attendants and pilots are well-meaning and skilled, nothing can make up for no leg room and a reclining seatback in my face.

/end grumpiness. ;)
