Italian folklore holds that each lentil eaten on the first day of a new year represents some money that will be obtained that year. How much does each lentil represent? Who knows - "un pezzo d'oro" could be any size.

I would be anticipating far more income in 2006 if we hadn't eaten our lentils (along with the equally traditionally pig's foot) as the third course of our New Year's Day feast.

Excellent! I have eaten approximately one million lentils in the last 24 hours.

hmmmm ... here, it's black-eyed peas, which I forgot to buy. Maybe I should go get some?

I grew up with the black-eyed peas tradition, courtesy of my father's side of the family. It's crucial to cook them with iron, whether it's a nail in the pot, or an iron pot. Today, eating Italian new year's foods at a friend's home, we made do with a Slovenian red wine rich in iron.

Buon Anno! (by way of greeting and introduction) - I'm here via friendsfriends (we have [livejournal.com profile] amberspyglass in common). Because every classicist needs a few medievalists, I friended you. Hope you don't mind.

Buon anno e auguri! It's good to meet you. I don't mind in the least. Equally, every medievalist needs a few classicists.
