True, but I still wouldn't mind hearing about yours if you were willing to share. They also differ a great deal from defense to defense within a given department. So much depends on a committee.

Let's just say there was a distinct lack of tension around mine, since the previous week the internal examiner had checked to ensure that I would be free for 'celebratory' lunch after the viva.

UK vivas tend to be small and intimate: an external, an internal, and (possibly) supervisor, plus candidate (unlike the European variety which are much more public and to which anyone can, theoretically, turn up). Mine was a genial conversation about my research.

My sister, who has spent a fair bit of time in the Italian system, was presuming she could come to my defense until I told her otherwise. Of course, if our defenses were open, then I'd also have a somewhat better sense for what they are like, since I could have attended several.
