If I were a Renaissance artist-engineer, this is completely what I would look like. (Link is to entry's userpic.) Admire the background - clearly, I am designing something clever. The icon was drawn by the extremely talented

relentlesstoil, who I haven't seen in ~~a million years~~ entirely too long. (Go browse her last two months' worth of made-for-charity user pics and her own user pics to see more of her lovely creations.)

The weather has taken a turn for the chill. The cold rolls off of the apartment's large windows. It's no longer easy to leave all the doors open, to let the sunshine glow in the rooms. The sun, however bright in the blue sky, doesn't warm as much as it did, and the curtains are better insulators. I have been congratulating myself on my cunning in putting my desk chair right next to a radiator. I shouldn't have the excuse for not working of cold, stiff fingers this winter.

I am looking forward to this week: meetings with friends, a new email account (which won't replace anything old, don't worry!), booking tickets for future travel, finishing off an overdue project, and starting on urgently loooming projects which will temporarily have the excitement of novelty attached to them. There is chocolate and warmth and a finished wardrobe and a lovely new icon in my life. That'll do.

It's supposed to get colder towards the end of the week so be sure to bundle up! Although, obviously, a lass who has lived in Toronto needs no such advice :)

Just because I've lived most of my life in northern climes doesn't mean I'm any good at figuring out the next season's worth of clothing. I have all the right clothing, but I inevitably over or underdress for a few weeks before settling into a new season. Thank you for the warning. If I layer, then even overdressing shouldn't be too problematic - just heavy.

At this time of year in Manchester, anyway, I usually go for the winter coat but lighter clothes underneath--today I'm in corduroys and a light waffle-weave shirt. As winter sets in I'll add gloves and a scarf to that. I have rather more padding than you do but I shouldn't think you need to be too concerned about layering on more than the winter coat and a scarf at this point! And, of course, never forget the umbrella...although that's more true for Manchester than London.

Winter coat - that's the problem. My winter coats are generally designed for serious amounts of winter. If it's above zero, I can't really wear them unless I'm only wearing lightweight clothing underneath. I shouldn't complain though, if I'm more worried about being overheated than too cold in the winter!

Mine is a real winter coat too (used a similar one while I was at Smith) but that's why I was saying I only wear lightweight clothes under it, at least until it gets really cold. I find that actual temperatures here are also deceptive--the cold in Manchester, anyway, is *very* damp, so even though it might not look icy on the temperature gauge, one ends up feeling very cold anyway!

I love your little icon! And it's true: if you were a Medieval/Renaissance engineer, not only would you have mill schematics running through your head, but you'd wear something with EXACTLY that kind of neckline.

It's lovely. I almost wish you had a little owlfish attribute, so we could tell who you are. But that's only 'cos I was talking abot 'reading' churches today.

It's a picture of me by someone who hasn't seen me in ten years. Strong on the right spirit, right on the general sense of resemblance, a little fuzzy on particulars, but it looks more like me than the anime avatar from earlier this week. These were the last real photos I posted of myself, and they're really more of my suit than me. The closest I have to photos which vaguely resemble the icon are these, most the top one for braided hair.

I have so many more Playmobil owlfish icon ideas! I want one for celebrations and one for travelling and one for restaurants (as opposed to food more generally).

Speaking of picturing people, not that I did, but last night I dreamt that you were living in our spare room while working on your dissertation about Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Oh my goodness. You're all grown up and so elegant. I swoon.

I'm a big girl now!

That's amazingly cool and flattering. I love Garcia Marquez, but one of the reasons I do history is because I just don't have the right kind of brain for Lit. Or for writing about it. I can actually read and enjoy and understand many types of fiction.

And you look nothing like I expected -- For some reason, I thought of you as very femme-gamine with dark hair -- kind of Audrey Hepburn-y meets chick from The Matrix. Oops!

I vaguely resemble my avatar picture, but only if you substitute stronger Scots x central-European features (beaky nose, for example). And my hair is sometimes reddish blonde, depending on the season. I did go a serious auburn once, and people thought it was my natural colour. Apparently, I act more like a redhead, whatever that means ... ;-)

Oddly enough, I've never read anything by Garcia Marquez, so I cannot account for the appearance of his work in my dream. I would much rather tell stories than analyze them - although I still do a certain amount of analysis in my historical work even so.

The major problem with these particular photos is that they show me looking very serious - and I'm not usually. I love the idea of being a cross between Audrey Hepburn and Trinity! I don't feel angry enough to be a redhead - if a volatile temper is what's required?

Dunno -- mine's not all that volatile, although a colleague once said that it's clear I have very low tolerance for bullshit. At least, professionally ...

On a totally different subject, I'm hosting the next Ancient/Medieval Carnivalesque at my more public site and would love to include the spelt post, but don't want to link here if anyone would feel uncomfortable about the extra traffic. Is there somewhere else you might want to post it, or shall I just forget I mentioned it?

LJ is all about being able to handle large amounts of traffic with aplomb. Indeed, if traffic is a worry, LJ can handle it better than any other site I could transfer the post to, I have to say. I'd be delighted to have the spelt post included if you'd like to.

Oh -- I was just more worried about people's privacy. But if no one minds ... It's not till 3 December, so if any of the regular commenters object, they should let me know. I wouldn't normally ask, but lj has a lot of people who blog about more personal stuff and often have more professional blogs elsewhere as well. If people are trying to keep their lives separate, I want to make sure that's respected.

I can post another reminder about how small and easily-searched and indexed the web is. It can't hurt. Plenty of people don't think about the issue nearly often enough. I've had a few friends burned in the past who didn't realize.

Yeah -- it is. I was thinking that there are people on your flist who have locked down all their posts, though. I wouldn't want them to feel threatened.

It does look a lot like you, except I can't imagine all your hair fitting under that cap. Perhaps the cap is bigger than the foreshortening makes it look.
