Two days and three pieces of Ikea furniture* later, C.'s parents have left with their power drill, C.'s brother has caught his plane back to Germany, and a great many of my books are put away. The wardrobe - which was the long and complicated piece of the Ikea puzzle - will be a great deal more useful when I have a great many more hangers.

Hangers are funny things. When I moved to Toronto, I went to my local dry cleaner and asked if they'd sell me hangers. Instead of charging me, I was given more than I could comfortably carry and never again lacked for hangers in Toronto. Here, our generically-furnished apartment arrived with ten Ikea hangers. I begged another ten off our local dry cleaner and bought skirt hangars, but I need more of both. C.'s mother promises me some of her surfeit when I'm up in Manchester for American Thanksgiving. Hangers are one of those minor things in life for which it just doesn't seem worth paying 50p or more each, the price for which the nearer shops sell them. Eventually, eventually, we will have properly moved into this apartment. I just hope it happens before we start to move out again.

* My thanks again for [livejournal.com profile] lazyknight's services in picking up the furniture in the first place!

Our new IKEA wardrobe is cerulean blue and known only as "Mammut" (and look like it belong on a Disneyland ride). We have the reverse problem though, we have gone from two large inbuilt wardrobes and cupboards to one Mammut, and have more hangers than will fit (and that's without clothes). I want a chest of drawers but am not willing to pay more than 20 squid, nor am I willing for them to not match perfectly the rest of the room (mahogony effect and more cerulean blue) so the rest of our clothes are still languishing in plastic crates.

Except for the bit involving international shipping and the awkwardness of packing large numbers of hangers, my moving story is pretty much the same as yours. The one built-in closet here is tiny. The place came with a very thin wardrobe as well, but even between them, that still made for very little storage space. The new wardrobe probably doubles our clothing storage space here. If only I'd shipped the hangars. The wardobe is one of the Pax variations - but assembling it wasn't all that peaceful a process.

I looked at Pax for a while, mainly because I was hoping for something black, and the closest I could get was the chalkboard doors for it, even though the rest of the warddrobe wouldn't have been. As for a visit - I have requested a week of annual leave 29/11 - 6/12 inclusive (working the Sat though), and should find out tomorrow if I've got it for sure. I am definitely going to reserve some cheapy Megabus tickets if I do get it, because I really want a day just to wander around Camden for skirts and head out to the Fantasy Centre on Holloway Road :) Would be lovely with company if that strikes your fancy?

P.S. I'll be away from London in December starting on the 10th for a week. Before that is good for me, plus a few days after the 18th - if you happen to be coming this way again any of those times.

When I was helping to close down a theatrical costumier's, I was involved in throwing away approximately 30,000 hangers of all varieties. They filled two large builders' skips.

Thrift shops such as Salvation Army are great places to get (free) hangers.

That's a useful suggestion!
