Thank you to everyone who recommend translations of Beowulf and Italo Calvino's work. If you haven't responded and have a favorite Don Quixote translation (or further thoughts on translators of Calvino), I'd still be interested in hearing from you.

i'm going to the Neil Gaiman/Lenny Henry thing too! i'm quite looking forward to it. i wasn't enamoured over Anansi Boys, but I went to a Neil reading a year or so ago for Wolves in the Walls and ejnoyed that so much because he's so personable. lenny Henry should be loads of fun.

I haven't read Anansi Boys yet. I know, Neil Gaiman's on a book tour for it, so really I should in the next week. I have a train trip coming up next weekend which should be long and slow due to weekend track reconstruction, that popular British holiday sport.

You're right, he really is wonderful in person. I went to a reading he did when Worldcon was in Toronto, and am looking forward to hearing him again.

Paris was a great deal of fun, thank you!

i'm really sorry i didn't contact you to sort out when to meet up, but we've decided not to go tonight after all. :/ we've had a really hectic last few days and are feeling exhausted. as much as i wanted to go to this event, i just couldn't face going into central london tonight. sorry. :(

C. did say he didn't see you in the audience, but then again, he doesn't have the best memory for faces and, despite all the empty seats at the back, there were a fair many people there.

It was a fabulous event though - and I hope that a tranquil evening was just as wonderful for you. Rest is important.

I once talked to Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett at the same time (briefly). I ran into them walking down the street at the last Toronto Worldcon. I have not, however, met Sean Bean or Colin Firth. But who knows? Maybe they're fans too.

I liked the Tobias Smollett translation of Don Quixote, but haven't done comparative translation-shopping. It may not be literal, but it's lively in an 18th-century sort of way. If the text has a bit of linguistic patina on it, well, so does the original for a spanish reader.
