[livejournal.com profile] billyabbott posts about Sunday's pie-off, and, even more excitingly, posts a selection of photos of the event!

Meanwhile, for thirty seconds of entertainment or usefulness, go fill out [livejournal.com profile] kashmera's short poll on spelling. She especially needs more data from Canadians and Americans.

On a day like Sunday, two times the number of attendees could have turned up and we would not have lacked for pie.

Could that also be "useful entertainment"?

Question: The local pseudo-English (although owned by real English ex-pats) pub does a Shepherd's Pie that seems to include no lamb and has tons of melted cheese on top of the lovely spuds. Opinions?

[not bored to death from syllabus writing. not.]

It could be useful entertainment, but not everyone might find it entertaining. It's useful regardless though, I suppose.

Does the Shepherd's Pie include meat, or at least sautéed tofu or something to replace the lamb? I'd say that lamb's optional, but there must be a minced meat-style layer. Cheese is optional too, as far as I'm concerned, although some would argue that a classic Shepherd's Pie does, in fact, require the melted cheese on top. Upon reflection, I couldn't tell you if traditional pies are picky about the kind of cheese on top though.

(I hope syllabus writing finishes itself quickly.)

mince. of the beef variety. As far as I can tell, it's mince amnd frozen mixed veg bound together with Bisto and covered with mashies and cheese.

Thanks on the syllabus ... I seem to have been temporarily "rescued" by a migraine.

All this talk about pies makes me think about a nice fish pie, though. Must get the recipe from X.

So, now that you are done, are you on the evil job search? There are some interesting ones out there, if you're willing to relocate to the US.

I would happily relocate to the US, where, unlike the UK, there are jobs in the history of technology, among other things. But I won't be doing it any time soon. If I was absolutely serious about this job hunt, above all else, I would almost certainly be moving to the US in the very near future. As is, I'm going to see what I can find here in the UK for the time being. If I can piece things together here for the next five years or so, my partner and I can end up having a nationality in common, which would be handy. After that, I'd be willing to look more serious at the US - depending on where I've ended up career-wise by then, of course.

I haven't actually been doing too much about job hunting lately, I'm ashamed to say, a situation I need to remedy very soon if I'm going to fulfill my intention of having at least something part-time starting in January.

Sooner is always better -- and it seems like there are at least post-doc options for brilliant young PhDs ... Good luck!
