If you have a standard atmospheric pressure the boiling point is 100C. If you add a handful of salt to a litre of water, the boiling point goes up to about 100.5C, but if you take your pan and take it off the stove and put it on the floor the boiling point will go up by about 0.3C because the pressure of the air above has increased.

From a Guardian article on The Fat Duck (via [livejournal.com profile] oursin), just named the "Best Restaurant in the World" by colleagues and critics in Restaurant magazine.

Britain still gets the occasional bad rap for food, but a quarter of the best fifty restaurants in this poll are British. The few times I've had a lousy meal at a British restaurant, I haven't been back. Additionally, London has the best-quality chain restaurants and takeout joints I've ever been in: Carluccio's, Prêt à Manger.

To be fair, the average cost of a meal is higher in the UK. For the price of a good Toronto meal, we can normally only find mediocre food in London, if we haven't planned ahead and read up on some tasty cheap location. Groceries, happily, are still competitively priced.

As a self-confessed total food snob, I can find plenty of restaurants in the UK at the level of quality I want. This is also true in every other country I have ever visited, though.

Exactly. The UK has more than recovered since the '80s (and earlier).

Might you be available in mid-July to have dinner in Leeds (and/or York, for that matter)?

I'm going to two conferences back-to-back in Leeds in July. Also, I've been reading tasty reviews of both Anthony's and No. 3 York Place in Leeds, but would enjoy going to either much more with good company. My best nights are Thursday July 14th, Saturday, July 9, and Sunday, July 17th, but really, I could do many of the other nights that week instead if those were to work better for you. I know this is months from now, but if you're interested, we can keep in touch and figure out the details closer to the time.

Certainly interested in that, yes please! As you say, keep in touch about it.

Agree that you can find the quality, but I'm with owlfish about the economics. In price/performance and ease of finding a place the Canadians have the Brits beat hands-down. Of about eight meals out in Toronto over the past couple of weeks, none fell below "good" in quality and none above "reasonable" in price.
Admittedly, the best couple of meals I've ever had have been in Britain -- Moody Goose in Bath, and Plumber Manor in Dorset. I wasn't paying the bill for one of them though.

Strange: I always thought adding salt lowered the boiling point of water. Have I been LIED to all these years??

Over Christmas, while visiting [livejournal.com profile] wibblepot and co., we played a variety-show kind of board game, involving charades, blind drawing, and trivia questions, among other things. Our team had a true-or-false question on this very subject. I got it wrong too.
