I've made a few updates to the list of Medievalists with weblogs, thanks to a correspondant who let me know about a Viking-themed weblog, which is in Finnish.

Epitaph to Edward Ward, watchmaker of Grimsby. Died Dec 12, 1817.

Here lies one who tried to equal time,
A task too hard, power too sublime;
Time stopped his motion, o'er threw his balance-wheel,
Wore off his pivots, though made of hardened steel;
Broke all his springs, his verge of life decayed,
And now he is as though he'd ne'er been made;
Not for the want of oiling, that he tried,
If that had done, he'd ne'er had died.

Quoted in "Tempus Edax Rerum", Clocks. Vol. 1 No. 1. (April 1979), p. 41.

Heh.. that sounds like a good epitaph for a Pern smith. :) Except springs aren't allowed there. (sigh)
