There isn't a right or a wrong answer to this, although you've found part of the explanation for why the question came up in the first place. Over lunch we came up with all three definitions: I've always thought it was N & S America; Colin thought it included Australasia, and for wines it includes most of the world that's not Europe.

I wanted to survey usage - particularly if there was a divide between Brits and North Americans as to what it included. Whatever you put was right, because all I wanted to know was how you thought of it.

Hunh. I never thought about that before; I've only ever really heard "The New World" in context of Columbus, which was what I based my answer on (N. and S. America only).
