I am very sorry to read this morning that John Peel, BBC Radio 1 DJ extraordinaire, has died. Who else would have done a millennial countdown consisting of three songs from every year of the previous century, in order?

That is sad news. I grew up listening to the BBC world service. so for me it's like a little part of my childhood has gone. :-/

My head was deluged with memories of listening to him on the radio after I read your post this morning. For some reason, the main thing that kept going through my head was an irreverent ditty sung by the cast of I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again:

Do ye ken' John Peel with his voice so grey?
He sounds as if he's far, far away..
He sends us to sleep at the end of the day
'til we're woken up by Tony Blackburn in the morning...

I feel a bit guilty with that going around my head, but when it was done all those years ago it was an affectionate swipe rather than a nasty one methinks.

Those are rather catchy lyrics. I can see why they might stick in your head.

It's a real pity. He was old for a DJ, but not particularly old in human terms, in his mid-60s.
