One day, perhaps in the not too distant future, an enterprising, hedonistic sociology student will propose as a PhD thesis ‘Restaurant guides as sociological phenomena’ and enjoy a very pleasant three years.

So writes Nick Lander, foodie and FT correspondant, beginning an article on the changes in British city pub food quality over the last fifty years. What a lovely idea.

It's good to know I have a back-up potential career awaiting me in food literature! I will be the first to admit, however, I am no serious student of sociology. My father and I once had a very embarassing moment walking through a Virginia university. Our paths fell in with a woman, a local. We asked her for directions, which she gave, and then asked us about our visit. We asked her what she taught, she said "Sociology." And then neither my father nor I could think of anything at all to say, to our complete embarassment.

You're very welcome, and welcome to keep the tape player for now. I'm in no hurry to have it back. After all, I couldn't even remember where I'd left it at first!
