A pie-update and a submission to [livejournal.com profile] pockawida's Sonnet Challenge all in one!

The Crisco'd crust rolled out in shattered shards -
I pasted them with water 'way from harm -
too cold, too wet, but rich with veggie lards -
the rolling should be when the dough's more warm.
From orchard pluck'd, the apples all arrayed
with cinnamon and sugar both mixed in,
lay in the crust, as thus directions bade.
I checked them in the oven once again.
The smoke detector rang - we opened doors.
The pie was bubbling with its blackened juice.
Yet, with its hour down, 'twas barely burned
with blackness from the oven's hell-hot roars.
'Twas justly done, a test-knife did adduce -
And so to perfect pieness we adjourned.

Fabulous!!!! I love baking, so this really does it for me :) I'm glad the pie was edible too.

It's really quite a good pie, to my pleasant surprise, especially given it's the first pie I've ever tried baking. Joy of Cooking recipes have nearly always turned out for me correctly on the first try, happily, even if they're often underflavored. This one was (is!) tasty since it had all the apples in it which left to their own devices could provide plenty of flavor even without the cinnamon.

I have to say, I spent most of my pie-baking hour pacing, with improbably eveningmares of burning down the house in my pie-making attempt.

And even if I rolled out the pastry too soon for the bottom, I learned and did it much better for the top part of the pie!

Me too. I was rather worried for a while that it wouldn't, which would have been a pity after all the shopping, reading, and work I did to prepare it. But it turned out!

Obviously, it wasn't burned. It was just blackened: Cajun pie! Yum.

Apple pie always makes the house smell so nummy, too : )

Did you get my long rambling email from yesterday about going to the ROM tomorrow?
