Dear LJ Users and other people with weblogs,

I wasn't really trying to scare several of you into seriously considering friendslocking all your posts when I posted the audience question!

I think it's very important that you all know that public posts can be cached by search engines for years to come, and that there's a chance that the Internet Archive will permanently cache a random and rare selection of your posts. It's important that once every blue moon you put your name into a search engine and see what the world can find out about you. Be aware that if your real name, your email address alias, or any of your common nicknames and personal details are attached to your LJ or you write about them, then those things too can end up indexed by search engines.

But as long as you go into this with open eyes and consciously make the decision to post whatever you like online, then that's what matters. After all, there are a great many of you I never could have found to have the pleasure of reading your journals if you made ALL your posts friendslocked!

When I got my LJ account, I thought one of the questions was whether I wanted my journal entries to be "spiderable" and therefore, I thought, cached by a search engine, should anyone one day be Googling the word "Myrtis" or "wubba".

So I thought I'd protected myself from this very scenario, with or without friendslocking.

Was I wrong? Hmm.

The non-spiderable option puts some HTML markup in your journal that well behaved spiders will respect (meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow, noarchive"). This will stop the well known robots (Google, Internet Archive, etc), but it is up to the robot to parse the page and decided whether they want to obey the request or not.

It is very effective on the major search engines - a google turns up lots of reference to you, but not your content. The Internet Archive only has one page of your journal from 4th-8th November 2002.

The non-spider option in effect gives you the option of retro-actively friends-locking posts, but it doesn't stop people finding you in the first place.

Aw, don't worry! You didn't scare me into it. It's been in the back of my mind for a while, and I just thought "why not?". But I don't see it as a bad thing, really. :)) *hugs*
