Waiting

Installing or reinstalling an entire operating system is a slow process. It's what C. spent all weekend doing. It's what I will hopefully be spending no longer than today on. It's a fidgety activity too. Every now and again, my computer needs me to hit enter or choose something from a menu, so I can't get too involved in working on anything.

I've read one article. I planted some morning glory seeds. I backed up data. And that's all I've done today so far.

Yep, I wasted a whole weekend doing that recently. It's still not entirely right as I can't get my flashcard reader to mount in 10.3.3 despite doing weird Unix things as recommended by the support pages.

Generally, I like 10.3.3 - except that I really should invest in more memory, since my machine has run noticeably more slowly ever since I installed it. I haven't tried a flashcard reader on my machine - my boyfriend has one mounted on his linux box so I could use it that way if I really needed to.

The next problem to deal with after the reinstall is an ongoing backup routine which doesn't involve burning to disc quite so often. C. wrote to say he'll upgrade our network tonight to 100MB - that should make backing up over the network more feasible. In the meantime, I'm harboring unwarrant covetousness for iDucks. I might at least try some other kind of keychain at some point.

I could cover my entire desk in electronic animals! That one would be even niftier if it breathed fire - of course, I don't really want a fire-breathing dino hanging out near my firewire equipment. The iDuck is still cuter.

My main criticism of the iDuck is that it looks like it would get damaged easily. My current USB Vault is one of those slim torpedo shaped ones, and as such is much better suited to being carted to school in a backpage along with other junk.

Although its cute, its a high price to pay. The dino on ther other hand isn't supposed to go anywhere, so it can look however it likes.

If they did a hub that looked like a duck....
Or other possibilities - 'design your own and we'll build it!'

It's true, the duck is rather impractical, which is why I won't actually get it, but the concept delights me. And it lights up! If it were a duck hub, the temptation to buy would be greater, I admit.

The iDucks are really cute. It almost makes me wish I had an iBook. But not quite. I like my big monitor.

You don't need an iBook to use an iDuck - you just need USB ports, and I know you have those. Still, it's a silly thing to buy, even if it is cute.

I and certain friends of mine call the formatting of a HD and re-installation of the operating system the "Nuke'n'Pave." Always a nerve-racking process, but worthwhile when it's been completed.
