The internet is full of advice on self-cleaning ovens and how to make your own oven cleaner, but I need advice on cleaning non-self-cleaning ovens with store-bought oven cleaner! I know to take the racks out. What I can't find is if I need to take the elements out too?
I have an oven-cleaning spray and rubber gloves and sponge. I should be prepared. I just want to know if there are crucial details I should know about and don't. I wish I knew quite how long the whole thing will take since I'm hoping to do more baking this afternoon.
This should be such a basic household skill, but I've never needed to do this before. Help!

I'm a bit nervous about the fumes, though, since everything online and on the bottle warns me about them. Ventilation, I can do. (Really, I wanted the apartment to be freezing cold this afternoon...) If I can finish cleaning it in the next hour, then maybe I can have baked squash as well as a clean oven before the PIMS reception this afternoon.
That's right - you probably already know, but the Pontifical Institue annual Christmas party is this afternoon in the PIMS common room, from 4:30 until 6, I think, if you're interested.

It's late enough I could still make the squash with lots of time to spare, but not make it to the reception, which I wanted to go to. Ah, dilemmas.
Have a good visit with your father this weekend!
